OKC Weekenders: A Gen X Guide to What’s Happening Within 50 Miles of Home

If you grew up in the era of mixtapes, Saturday‑morning freedom, and parents who believed a streetlight was the most reliable GPS device ever invented, then welcome home. I’m starting OKC Weekenders because, frankly, Our parents still do not know where we are. And honestly, neither do most of our friends. We’re Gen X — the generation that perfected disappearing for a weekend and showing back up on Monday like nothing happened.

But somewhere between the dial‑up modem screech and the rise of smartphones, we lost something. Not our independence — that’s hardwired — but our sense of discovery. We got busy. We got careers, families, responsibilities, and a calendar full of things that don’t exactly scream adventure. And yet, every weekend, I feel that familiar tug: What’s going on out there? What’s happening in OKC and the towns just far enough away to feel like a getaway but close enough to be home by bedtime?

So I built OKC Weekenders — a website dedicated to helping Gen X rediscover the joy of wandering, exploring, and showing up to things just because they sound fun. It’s a guide to everything happening in Oklahoma City and within a 50‑mile radius, curated with the dry humor, nostalgia, and practicality that only our generation truly understands.

Why Gen X? Why Now?

Because we’re still here. We’re still curious. And we’re still the ones who can turn a random festival, a small‑town parade, a live show, or a food truck gathering into a story worth telling.

We’re also the generation that remembers what it was like to go somewhere without posting about it. But let’s be honest — we also enjoy reading what other people thought about an event before we commit to leaving the house. That’s where OKC Weekenders comes in: real recommendations, real experiences, and a community of people who know how to have fun without making it a production.

What You’ll Find on OKC Weekenders

Every week, I’ll publish a new blog highlighting what’s happening around the metro and beyond. Think of it as your weekend briefing — the stuff worth checking out, the hidden gems, the events that might surprise you, and the ones that are just too weird to ignore. Gen X has always had a soft spot for the offbeat, and Oklahoma delivers plenty of that.

You’ll also find:

  • Event roundups

  • Spotlights on local venues

  • Interviews with creators, musicians, makers, and organizers

  • Road‑trip suggestions

  • Reviews from fellow Weekenders

And soon — because adventures aren’t free — we’ll be launching a store. Nothing obnoxious, nothing corporate, just Gen X‑themed merch and Oklahoma‑centric gear to help fund the excursions that make this whole thing possible. Think shirts, stickers, mugs, maybe even a “My parents still do not know where we are” bumper magnet for your next weekend wander.

A Community Built on Showing Up

One thing I want to make clear: OKC Weekenders isn’t just a website. It’s a community. And communities thrive when people participate.

So when you go to an event — whether it’s a concert, a craft fair, a chili cook‑off, a ghost tour, or a small‑town festival with a name that makes you laugh — tell us about it. Leave a comment. Share your experience. What was the vibe? Was the parking a nightmare? Was the food worth the wait? Did the band nail it or phone it in?

Your stories help other Gen Xers decide where to spend their precious weekend hours. And let’s be real — we’re not 22 anymore. We don’t have time for bad events, boring venues, or places that don’t deliver. We want the good stuff, the fun stuff, the stuff that makes us feel like we’re still the same people who once stayed out too late and got home just in time to pretend we’d been there all along.

Civility Matters — Even When We’re Honest

Now, I know our generation is known for its sarcasm, its bluntness, and its ability to call things exactly as we see them. But I’m asking one thing from everyone who joins the OKC Weekenders community: keep it civil.

We can be honest without being cruel. We can be funny without being mean. We can disagree without turning it into a meltdown. Gen X has always been the calm center of the storm — the ones who watched the chaos around us and shrugged. Let’s keep that energy.

If you loved an event, say so. If you didn’t, explain why. But remember that real people put real effort into making these things happen. Civility isn’t just polite — it’s part of being a good community member.

Why a 50‑Mile Radius?

Because that’s the sweet spot. It’s far enough to feel like an adventure but close enough that you don’t have to pack a suitcase or find someone to feed the dog. It’s the perfect Gen X distance — spontaneous, manageable, and full of possibilities.

Within 50 miles of OKC, you’ll find:

  • Small towns with big personalities

  • Outdoor spaces that feel like a reset button

  • Live music in unexpected places

  • Festivals that range from charming to downright bizarre

  • Food worth driving for

  • Art, culture, history, and plenty of surprises

We’re mapping it all. And we’re doing it with the curiosity of latchkey kids who grew up exploring without supervision.

Join the Movement

OKC Weekenders is just getting started, but the mission is clear: help Gen X rediscover the joy of weekends. Not the chore‑filled weekends, not the “catch up on everything” weekends — the fun ones. The ones that remind us who we are.

So bookmark the site. Read the weekly blog. Check out the events. Comment on what you experience. Invite your friends. Share the weird stuff you find. And when the store launches, grab something that makes you smile and helps keep the adventures going.

We spent our childhoods roaming freely. We spent our early adulthood figuring out life. Now it’s time to reclaim the weekends — one event, one town, one adventure at a time.

And with that…

Looks like the street lights are on so I better go home.
